Synthesia is very good at one thing: turning a script, a deck or a document into a presenter video that employees or customers can learn from. Its customer stories are about compliance courses, onboarding and sales enablement, and its Enterprise plan adds SSO, SCORM export and a dedicated success manager. If that is your job, it is hard to beat.
The reasons people switch tend to be narrower. The first is cost per minute. As of October 2026 Starter is $19 a month billed monthly, and its pricing page estimates that the credits add up to about 12 extra minutes of video on top of the 10 free minutes. The second is fit: a presenter in front of a slide rarely works as a social ad, and Synthesia has no way to launch one. The third is scope, when the video is only one piece of what a small business needs to get done this week.
It goes into an LMS or a help centre. Stay in the avatar-studio group. Colossyan is the most similar product, with a free plan of 20 minutes a month, quizzes and branching inside videos, and SCORM export on Professional. HeyGen is the broader avatar tool, with 500+ presenters on its free plan, 175+ languages on Creator and SCORM on Business.
It goes on social as organic content. Captions and Descript edit footage you record yourself. Captions leans into AI edits, an AI twin and generated B-roll; Descript lets you cut video by editing the transcript. Both have free versions, and both treat avatars as one feature among many.
It goes into an ad account. Creatify is built for avatar video ads, with 1,500 AI actors on Pro, ad templates and a listed Ad Launcher. Vibiz takes a different route: it writes hooks from your website, films UGC-style ads with your real product in frame, delivers 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9 cuts, and launches them as Meta or Google campaigns. It also makes the static ads, the landing page with checkout and the posts. The trade-off is price and entry: Vibiz Pro is $79 a month, or $63 a month billed yearly, with no free plan or trial, and paid ads carry a service fee, for example $6 a day on a $30 daily budget.
Run the same 60-second script through each shortlisted tool. Judge lip sync and hand movement on a phone screen, since that is where most viewers will see it. Count how much of a month's allowance the test used: Synthesia, HeyGen, Creatify and Captions all meter credits, and B-roll, 4K or premium models use more. If the video is an ad, check what happens after export, because only Creatify and Vibiz describe launching it.
