The fee as a share of budget
Redefine Web's example: a $1,500 management fee on a $2,000 ad budget means the agency takes 75 percent of your total investment before a click.
An AI ad agency is worth it when you have budget to spend and nobody with hours to run it. In 2026 a traditional PPC retainer starts at $1,000 to $1,500 a month and runs $2,500 to $5,000 mid-tier, while AI ad software costs $12 to $80 a month for one person. AI-native agencies sit between: Vibiz's done-for-you service is listed from $499 a month against about $3,000 for a traditional agency. Below a few thousand dollars of monthly spend, software plus two hours a week usually wins.

Redefine Web says managed accounts start making sense at $3,000 to $5,000 in monthly spend; WebFX says you need roughly $1,000 to $3,000 a month in spend for meaningful data.
Software wins when you spend under a few thousand dollars a month, can give it two hours a week, and your ads are functional, offer-led creatives that AI handles well.
A traditional agency wins for senior strategy, large productions or a named person who owns the number. An AI-native one wins when you have the budget but not the hours and want creative volume in days, not weeks.
"AI ad agency" now means two different things, and the price depends on which one you are buying. The first is a traditional agency that uses AI tools. Adapt Worldwide's February 2026 essay draws the line elsewhere: a traditional agency works in execution mode, launching, adjusting and reporting in channel silos, while an AI-native one designs the system and leaves execution to the software. The second is a small senior team running its own AI pipelines and selling the output at a software-like price, priced per scope, with the production automated and people kept for strategy, taste and accountability. A third model is appearing: outcome pricing, a low base fee plus a share of attributed revenue.
The software prices in the table come from the AI ad generators surveyed in How much does an AI ad generator cost?. Whichever option you price, a retainer is worth it when the fee is a small share of the budget and the budget is large enough to learn from.
