Buffer is hard to beat on its own terms. As of October 2026 it has a free plan for three channels, Essentials at $6 per channel a month ($5 billed yearly) and Team at $12 per channel ($10 yearly) with unlimited users and approvals. It publishes to twelve networks and includes an API even on the free tier. Nobody switches to save money.
People switch for one of three reasons. Their reports have to impress a client, and Buffer's analytics feel thin. They manage several brands and per-channel pricing adds up past about ten channels. Or the scheduler is not the problem at all: the queue is empty because nobody has time to write and design posts, and there is still no ad running and no page for it to land on.
Better reports. Metricool is the obvious move. Its paid plans keep unlimited analytics history, produce PDF and PPT reports, track up to 100 competitors on Starter and connect to Looker Studio. It prices by brand: $25 a month covers five brands, which for an agency is often cheaper than Buffer's per-channel model.
A more visual plan. Later suits brands whose Instagram grid is the shop window. You get feed previews, product tagging and a shoppable link-in-bio page, with a 14-day trial. Watch the post caps: 30 per profile a month on Starter.
More AI help. SocialBee bundles unlimited AI content generation from $24 a month billed yearly, with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Predis.ai goes a step further and generates the visuals, videos and ad creatives on credits from $19 a month billed yearly; its trial takes a card.
Content plus ads and pages. Vibiz is the broadest option. It reads your website, proposes a month of posts with captions per channel and designed visuals, and publishes them to Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn and X after you approve. The same visuals can run as Meta or Google ads launched from the workspace, pointing to a landing page with checkout that Vibiz also builds. It costs $79 a month, or $63 a month billed yearly, which is a lot more than Buffer, and there is no free plan; the trade is that it replaces the design tool, the ads manager and the page builder as well. See Vibiz social posts for how a month gets made.
Team governance. Hootsuite is on the list for completeness. If you need listening and message routing it is the established choice, but at $99 per user a month billed annually it is many times Buffer's cost.
Keep Buffer running while you try something else; at a few dollars a channel there is no rush. Pick one week of posts and one goal, such as more clicks to your shop. In a scheduler, measure how long setup takes and whether the reports answer your question. In a content tool, measure how many generated posts you would publish without edits. If an ad is part of the goal, check what it costs to launch and where the click lands.
