The usual reason is the bill. As of October 2026 Hootsuite's plans page lists Standard at $99 per user a month, Professional at $199 and Advanced at $399, all based on annual billing, with Enterprise on a quote. Content approvals, the feature many small agencies want first, sit on Advanced. For a two-person team that is a large yearly commitment for what is often mostly scheduling.
The second reason is fit. Hootsuite is built for social and communications teams: listening with trend forecasts, message routing, team productivity reports and SSO. A founder or a small marketing team rarely uses most of that. What they lack is time to make the posts, and Hootsuite's Wisdom AI drafts content without replacing a designer.
Like for like. Sprout Social is the alternative to consider if you genuinely use the team features. It is priced the same way, per seat, from $79 a seat a month billed yearly for Essentials up to $399 for Advanced, and it offers a 30-day trial without a card. You will not save much, but you may prefer its inbox or reporting.
Cheaper scheduling. Buffer, Metricool and Later each cost a fraction of Hootsuite. Buffer charges per channel and covers twelve networks; Metricool charges per brand and adds serious reporting, competitor tracking and guided Google and Facebook campaign creation; Later is the most visual, with a shoppable link-in-bio page. All three have a free plan or a 14-day trial, so you can move a month of posts over before paying.
Make the content too. If the real gap is content, look at tools that generate it. Predis.ai creates posts and ad creatives on credits from $19 a month billed yearly. Vibiz writes and designs the posts from your brand kit, schedules them to Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn and X, and builds landing pages. It also runs Meta and Google campaigns. Pro is $79 a month, or $63 a month billed yearly for the workspace, with no per-user charge, but there is no free plan or trial and ads carry a service fee on budget.
Export your history. Hootsuite reports and scheduled posts do not move automatically. Download what you need before the renewal date.
Count seats and channels. Work out your real cost on each pricing model: per user at Hootsuite and Sprout, per channel at Buffer, per brand at Metricool, per social set at Later.
Decide whether you need listening. If social listening is a reporting requirement, only Sprout Social on this list comes close, and Metricool covers competitor benchmarks.
Test with next month's calendar. Put the same four weeks of posts through your shortlist. With a scheduler, time how long it takes to load them; with Vibiz, see whether the posts it proposes are good enough to approve as they are.
